TURKEY is a fascinating country, rich in history, culture and natural beauty. This is where East meets West: spanning the continents of Asia and Europe, Turkey was the birthplace of Islam, Judaism and Christianity. Here you will find the echoes of civilisations that flourished some 10,000 years ago, and a democratic tolerance born of many centuries of cultural evolution. With a strong sense of community and a level of hospitality and tolerance that recalls gentler days in the UK, most people still do not lock their doors. Turkey is a land of contrasts, from its ancient cities to its advanced technology; from its stunning mountains to its 5,000 miles of sparkling coastline. At certain times of year, it’s possible to spend the morning skiing on some of Europe’s finest powdery slopes, and the afternoon sunbathing on the shores of a tranquil bay or golfing on one of the many world class golf courses. The unspoilt natural environment makes Turkey an ideal place for outdoor pursuits such as bird watching, trekking and sailing. Classical ruins are more abundant here than in Greece or Italy. The mellow climate nurtures the production of an abundance of fruit and vegetables, while local farmers make little use of herbicides and pesticides – resulting in a wealth of tasty organic food that contributes to Turkey’s delicious and varied cuisine. A member of NATO for over half a century, Turkey has full membership of the European union in sight. The Turkish government has been driving through extensive changes to comply with EU membership criteria. This has resulted in huge investment in infrastructure, large-scale privatisations, and liberalisation of the banking sector. There has never been a better time to invest in a country that is clearly poised to reclaim some of the prominence it once held as centre of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires. A multivolume book would not be sufficient to describe the many unique features of Turkey – this is obviously just a start!
